So you've got a machine at another location that you need to be able to operate but, due to Mutphy's Law, you never enabled Remote Desktop (RD).  And, again due to Murphy's Law, the local operator can't enable RD.  What do you do?

Enable Remote Desktop remotely using the registry editor and Connect Network Registry option.  This allows you to enable Remote Desktop. Then, reboot the machine and you're able to connect.

You’ve seen them but may not be aware of how useful they can be. I’m referring to Quick Response codes – those small squares full of dots that you have started seeing everywhere. They are actually a fancy form of a bar code – a 2 dimensional block of dots instead of a strip of vertical lines.

Lately, I've seen several machines infected by TDSS.  TDSS is a rootkit that hides in the system files (such as cdrom.sys or atapi.sys) and frequently goes undetected by a lot of virus/spyware scanners.  Symptoms of an infection are:

  • Being redirected to websites like z0g7ya1i0.com.
  • USB devices failing to work properly.
  • Various system errors.
